Memorial Day.. Inspiration from many sources

This is the weekend when we are grateful for our freedom and those that have given so much. It is also a time when we come together as family and friends and the common element tends to be food. Inspiration from a varied number of sources produced a successful food gathering.

We begin with an amuse bouche inspired by my cousin, Chef Joshua Jensen – – it launched the perfect afternoon.

This was the perfect start to our afternoon… A Watermelon, Lime, and Mint Granita

 

The pizza dough is very easy to prepare (thank you, Mark Bittman) and the toppings incredible. We stepped away from the original recipe and replaced the walnuts with toasted pine nuts.

Rib Eye steaks from Jennifer and Behan (so happy they have moved back to NY) were over-the-top. Simply prepared and grilled to a delicious medium-rare finish on our Big Green Egg. Behan did a test-run the day before to ensure the day’s success!

Farro is always a favorite salad, no matter the time of year. In this case, I grilled the peppers to get a smoky element. the asparagus was blanched until tender then sliced. As for the vinaigrette, I used one from another dish. It was very well received.

 

Basil ice cream was easy and worth the effort.
