Purple Monkey?

Croton-on-Hudson is a charming and interesting place. There is the Black Cow Coffee Company, The Blue Pig (homemade ice creams, hotdogs, etc.) and soon, the Purple Monkey!

What is it about animals and giving them a “color?”

What’s next, the Chartreuse Giraffe?

Stay tuned!

Also, note that the new location is in the former “Curves.”  Guess if you can’t lose weight there, turn it around and gain it!

The Purple Monkey has a location in Ossining, in the Arcadian Shopping Plaza. The location in Croton will be their second. It’s empty most nights so I don’t know how they can open a second. The ice cream isn’t homemade. It’s Gifford’s. It’s OK, but nothing better than a pint of Ben and Jerry’s can’t provide.

  2. As the owner of The Black Cow Coffee Company and the original owner and founder of The Blue Pig Ice Cream Factory(now just The Blue Pig) in Croton I find it pretty obnoxious to “try” and open another animal themed food business especially an animal themed ice cream store in such a small town. I don’t see them getting much support from the community. There is already a buzz about how obnoxious it is….good luck?!

Maybe they want to ride on the coattails of the successful animal themed shops already opened. I’ll reserve judgment on the place until I’ve sampled their wares.

  8. O.K……..I went to get my car washed in Ossining to day and thought why not get some ice cream before……..went to The Purple Monkey, had never been there before so was open to the experience. As per my post above, unless they have lots of capital they are going to be in trouble in Croton. Nothing spectacular, icy soft serve, very plain decor not much different than Baskin Robbins was. Croton is going to speak and I wish them luck………..

Hello …..Michael, it sounds like your jealous that there is another ice cream store coming to town or maybe afraid of alittle competition……huh!! As a customer of both the Blue Pig and the Purple Monkey, I would have to say that I disagree with you that they are always empty at night. I have been in there many nights and they were very busy!! Also business probally has slowed down some because it’s winter time, but I started going when they first opened in late August and they were packed!! the ice cream is not homemade, your right, but Gifford’s Vanilla and Chocolate got voted World’s Best last year and the Strawberry was voted the best in the United States!! They also offer Fogurt which is very low in calories and comes in alot of different flavors. I think that the decor in the Purple monkey is very nice with the marble tile and Purple Monkey painting and a vast improvement from the old Baskin and Robbins, and they offer a good number of tables and chairs inside compared to the Blue Pig is very small inside. ( not everyone likes to sit outside in the hot sun while their ice cream melts, and what if it rains at the Blue Pig????)

I am the owner of THE BLUE PIG in Croton. I can assure you that I make a Premium Ice Cream. Voted best Vanilla by Westchester Magazine in a blind test test beating Haagen Daz and Ben & Jerrys. The Blue Pig was also voted best Ice Cream shop. I have a fantastic Non Fat Frozen Yogurt by Yo Cream plus other great items. The Blue Pig is a Family gathering place in the Summer with plenty of seating in our wonderful outside back yard, as yes there is plenty of shade. I also have added some more seating inside. Croton is a small town that can’t support two ice cream shops. I am dismayed that The Purple Monkey has an animal theme, and did not find another town that could use an ice cream store more than us. I live in Croton, I work in Croton and I am very active in our wonderful community, employing the young people of this town. Many of my loyal customers are very angry with this new business with the obvious animal theme coming to town.

  13. Wow Danny, throwing some politics into the mix….my original comment was about the name of this ice cream store. It is obnoxious and people are upset. Come into the Black Cow I’ll buy you a coffee and we can talk about it……politics aside…..

How old are you? It is a business venture-if the owner of Purple Monkey thought he could bring more than the Blue Pig, then his product should speak for itself…..

I have heard of Gifford’s, http://WWW.giffordsicecream.com. They have many awards, I know that their Van and Choc won the “Worlds Best”. It seems to be as good a Ben and Jerry’s and HD.

I think it’s as good if not better.

For all that have something negative to say about Purple Monkey Ice Cream then you have either not tried it or are just trying to make your business or choice seem better. Just because there will be another ice cream store in the same town doesn’t mean that it is obnoxious and for people to say it is just seems like you are a little insecure about what will happen. I have tried The Purple Monkey in Ossining and The Blue Pig many times and i have to say i would go there over The Blue Pig any day. (Just my personal opinion)

Wow, I agree with one of the comments posted above…..competition is a good thing! How many nail salons, pizza joints and delis are in Croton? They are literally on top of one another! And no one is complaining about them. Maybe both can exist?? Why does it have to be a choice?
